Abstract

Asthma is a chronic and common disease, which affects more than100 million people in the world. The issue of health care expenditures has gained importance worldwide. In many countries, expentidures due to asthma therapy make up more than 2% of all health expentidures. The analysis evaluating the economic aspect of asthma are classified into 3 groups. They are cost, cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis. Today, the most frequently used type of economic analysis is the cost-effectiveness analysis. With this analysis, two or more methods used for the aim of treating same disease are evaluated according to cost and health measures. Many studies show that inhaled steroids are more cost effective than sodium chromoglicate and leukotriene antagonists. Different results have been found in studies comparing inhaled corticosteroids with respect to cost-effectiveness. According to cost-effectiveness, the combined preparations containing inhaled steroid and long-acting b2-agonist are superior to inhaled steroid alone. The patient education reduces costs, and increases effectiveness of the treatment in asthmatic patients. In cost-effectiveness studies, the most significant differences have been found between the educated and non-educated patients. As a result, cost-effectiveness studies for planning of asthma therapy should be taken into account.
